I looked on genuki site, and there is a link to list of baptisms, and dates, one in 1792 one 1799, so the second one might be James. also found a marriage John Pope married Mary French 1792, so that might be his parents. looked on tithe maps for Shute, but no Pope names listed, but does not mean they weren't there, as some entries refer to "others", there is also a baptism for JOhn Pope born 1767, mother Mary pope, so might be illigit.
Other local parishes would be Axminster, Honiton, Yarcombe.
