I found it surprising to see that the other grandchildren of King Albert and Queen Paola did not show up on the balcony. I had not expected them in the Parliament as there is very limited space for the Royal Family in that hall.
This was the shortest ever king-less period in the Belgian history. Between the abdication of Albert II and the oath of Philip I there was no head of state in Belgian only the government representing the role. They used that moment to introduce the bill that will mean that the Royals are going to pay tax on their dotation. It was thought best to do that at that particular time so neither Albert nor Philip would have to do so.
