Thank you, Merlin, for the background you have provided, which made watching the whole service much more understandable. For instance, I had never realized that the Queen was kneeling at the altar when she signed the oath.
I still hope the color film that I saw in a theater in 1953 will be telecast at some point. It was not nearly as complete as this unedited coverage, of course, but the colors were wonderful.
My only problem with the rebroadcast coverage today (I was watching via cpac) was the extremely detailed repetition of the descriptions of all the military units. I know they were deeply important in 1953, but I could have enjoyed more coverage of the coaches and the Queen's return progress. The balcony scenes with the children were sweet.
The coverage never got to the fireworks, which I remember from pictures and which were amazing. At least they did include the Queen's evening balcony appearance in diadem and fur stole. She must have been so tired by then, but she and Prince Philip looked very happy.
