It was a shallow attempt on the part of Alan Don, the Scottish Dean of Westminster, at placating Scottish opinion after their Nationalists stole the Stone of Scone from Westminster Abbey in 1950. On top of that, Scottish views couldn't understand why the Government said 'No' to a separate Coronation in Scotland, plus they objected to post boxes appearing stamped E II R. Actually, I don't think I am being cynical!
