These two coaches look to be extremely grand. From Barker, the Speaker's Coach was drawn by two Whitbread's Brewery horses named Royal and Sovereign in red and gold harness. The coach weighs over 4 tons and could only proceed at a walking pace and on the flat; just 200 yards from New Palace Yard to the Abbey. Speaker's records were lost in a fire in 1834 which destroyed the old Houses of Parliament. Experts believe this coach might have been one of William III's coaches which George III transferred to the Speaker after acquiring his own new State Coach in 1762. |
