When you consider that Gerald Kelly produced at least two studies for each portrait and was rumoured to undo his work each night, so that he could stay holed-up in Windsor Castle for the entire Second World War, it's hardly surprising that these in particular should take on a certain artistic licence! It might also explain why the King looks flattering young for 1937 and the Queen much older, more 1945.
