If George VI really wore the scarlet surcoat for the anointing, he could probably not have been anointed on the chest, only on his forehead. I wonder if the painting is accurate, or if he was dressed in the white shirt and knee breeches for the anointing. The Queen's white linen gown bared her chest for the anointing, and my guess is that she followed her father's Coronation as much as possible, since they were so close. Also, she was present in 1937 at the age of 11 and remembered his Coronation.
