From one of my books spread out at home today -
"The Chair had been made by royal command. In his invasions of Scotland about 1296 Edward I had captured the legendary Coronation Stone of the Scottish kings - the Lia Fáil or ‘Stone of Destiny’. He sent the stone to London with instructions to his Serjeant Painter, Walter of Durham, to make a chair which would hold the stone beneath its seat, so that future kings of England should assert their claim to the Scottish throne by being crowned seated above the ‘Stone of Destiny’."
Just the beginning of a long long story.
