AM radio

Recently was out of town and rented a vehicle, a Volvo actually. I was disappointed when it did not have an AM radio. Was looking forward to hearing local folks.

Also am disappointed WBBM just uses 105.9 in its identification. Wonder what John Madigan would say. Remember when he would say, “Newsradio ssssssseventy eight.”

Sadly DetectiveTom, this is common. Tesla has no AM on their radios. Ford was going to eliminate it until there was screaming and palm greasing from the broadcast companies that reached Congress and it was shelved. As time goes by, you will see the FM radio disappear too. In my vehicle, the antenna is now integrated in the windshield and I will be nice by saying, it performs like 💩 on FM and on AM it introduces a ton of noise.

We have discussed on here in the past, no one cares about legal ID's anymore. Not even the FCC. They have relaxed the requirements so much it is mind boggling. Furthermore, this is methodical, as Audacity is planning to decommission/sell the AM at some point. (Go back to your first point, that AM was not even available in the car).

Times are surely changing. I am not averse to change, but there are rural areas in the US that rely on AM radio signals. What happens when some hacker or the government disables/shuts off the internet? Or we are invaded and it is shut off? How will communication and sending mass messages occur? Total insanity.

I grew up in a time when a lot of cars Only had AM radio. By the mid 1970s more cars included FM radio. It's crazy to imagine cars with NO AM RADIO. But the truth is that the younger generation doesn't even listen to FM radio. It's all streaming, iPad, appl music, etc. Even us older people like myself have YouTube Playlist. My Playlist includes music that there's no radio format for. Like the old song used to say, the Revolution Won't be Televised.

I believe that is a deliberate play on their name- Ex. "I can't believe the audacity of Audacy!"

Rockola, thank you for "getting it". 👍 Same as I reference Cumulus as "Cume Less". I often point out Audacy, concerning their bad business practices and why they have reached this stage. If it was not for Soros injection of dollars, they would have had a massive fire sale by now.

ABRockNJock, since we're being raw and real..... keep up the good work constantly posting items no one replies to! :-)

What I do when I post something in this forum is to bring to your attention and provide the necessary links, regardless if there's a dreaded paywall or not.

If I don't get replies to what I post in this forum, that's fine. If you want to make a comment, complaint or want to add something to the discussion, feel free.

There's nothing wrong with constructive criticism.

I thought I was the ONLY one who once owned a car with a windshield antenna. What a piece of junk!

AM reception was horrible. When I asked a dealer why would you build an antenna within the windshield, the answer was for anti-vandalism.

I finally went into a Radio Shack and bought a metal antenna where the height could be adjusted. It did improve AM radio reception and FM to a point, as well. The issue was going through the car wash. Folding down the antenna didn't always work. Loved the car, a Pontiac Grand Prix, hated the windshield antenna.

Hi Hunter,

The latest in windshield antennas are even worse, because the new radios are software defined, computer screens generating more noise but with less filtering used (they save more money). They also tend to be very "directional" on AM and FM, causing weird signals to be there, or not there. The in windshield antennas really increase the cost of the windshield itself if it needs to be replaced, another negative.

Also, it is no longer vandalism, the reason is.... "less drag and better fuel economy". The scary thing is, they are correct, but it is negligible unless it is combined with a ton of other modifications on the car so it adds up!
