I read this report from Barrett Media and found it quite interesting. The writer has solid credentials.

Too much new music in one hour seems to be a listener killer.

I have read some of the regulars on this board mention CHR stations are going deeper into their library. Songs which would naturally drop off the charts of a station, seem to have a longer shelf life.

WXRT-FM surrounds the new music it plays with familiar music. It's one of the few triple-A formats which plays as much classic rock as they do and it's a ratings and revenue success.

AAA and CHR are not the same beast. AAA focuses on TSL while CHR focuses on Cume along with target demos. Notice how the writer did not mention ages at all? Sidenote, the writer is not a legend or go to person in the industry. The internet has given a lot of people an avenue to spew some nonsense (aka opinion) and garner some attention getting a woody thinking they are more important than they are. This is a great example of it. Rampant in the sports industry. Politics too.

The bottom line, radio is dying. The average age for CHR is over 40 (one report I read put it at 50) years old when it used to be 18. Those 18 year olds would ride the wave of their life to other formats. There are literally no younger listeners so radio is appealing to older demos and that is why you are seeing a lot of gold and classic hit titles on CHR's. Why you also have titles being spun 90 times a week 52 weeks after first charting. It is just radical, never been this way. These 40 and 50 year olds are going to surf out of the demos for advertisers. There is no one replacing them!

CHR has always been hit oriented. New music. Trends. Younger demos overall did not want classic music (if they did wouldn't they be station surfing elsewhere to get it?) That is why the average CHR would turn over their audience every 3 year in the past. See above. No new (young) listeners, everything is out the window. This reclining chair commentator's column is out the window too!

No one i know under the age of 35 listens to radio. One person cited repetitive music and long commercial breaks as reasons for not listening. All of their music is on their phones.
I'm pushing 60 and my primary source of music is from YouTube with many Playlist that I curated. I also have a flash drive full of music. Satellite Radio is a better option than terrestrial radio. I will listen to livestreams of the Score and ESPN 1000, but the internet offers more and better options than terrestrial radio. IHeart, Audacy, and Cumulus have turned radio into a cookie cutter operation. CHR sounds the exact same all over the country, as does Classic Hits. CLASSIC HIP HOP, Hop Hop. Classic Rock. Hot AC. It's a shame what's happening to this medium.

WKDI, could have put my name on your post. I agree.

I was listening to KOLA 99.9 LA/Orange County last night. To hear Expose' on a Classic Hits station and in the same hour Pat Benetar, unheard of. 70s, 80s, 90s, 2K. Dance, Pop, Urban, Rock, 90s CHR Hip Hop, ALT. AC. They are almost consistently #1. They are one of the few terrestrials that do it right and I will listen to for more than 1 set of music. Todd C probably looks at their playlist and breaks out in a cold sweat! LOL.
