Xfinity Playing Hardball with CHSN

Before Saturday's home game between the Blackhawks & Buffalo Sabres at United Center, CHSN President Jason Coyle told the Sun-Times' Ben Pope that the new network & Xfinity remain very much at an impasse. For Blackhawks & Bulls' fans hoping to get the new network on Xfinity's air anytime soon, it doesn't look promising.

Coyle says that CHSN has made two offers to Xfinity, but the city's top cable system hasn't made any counter offers. While the issue appears to be CHSN wanting to be on Comcast's basic tier, but the cable provider wants to place it on the highest, most expensive tier. That's the word from The Athletic.

Although talks between CHSN & Xfinity/Comcast remain at an impasse at this hour, the rumblings & grumblings are that CHSN are in conversations with Fubo TV & Hulu, two of the nation's top streaming services. There's also been conversations about a direct to consumer app, but not quite yet.

Many Blackhawks & Bulls' fans have complained about the lack of carriage deals with Xfinity, let alone have expressed frustration with using an old fashioned antenna so that they could watch OTA on WJYS 62.2 & 62.3.

This is how cable companies keep losng subscribers. People get fed up and start looking for alternative ways to watch.

The issue at hand, when there is no alternative to watch elsewhere, the viewer is stuck and the team and provider (cable/sat) know it.

Main loss of subs for cable/sat is IP Broadband services (internet).

This isn't the first dispute between Xfinity and a regional sports network over carriage fees.

I'm not sure it's reached that point, but Xfinity has NOT been on in Denver for the last 5 years. The RSN, which airs the NBA's Denver Nuggets & NHL Colorado Avalanche, hasn't been on in the Mile High City to a similar carriage issue since 2019. It's been 5 years and counting.

It remains to be seen in due time if Bulls, Blackhawks & White Sox fans face the same dilemma with CHSN.

To change the backdrop for a moment...CHSN did announce today that they're simulcasting 670 AM The SCORE's popular "Mully & Haugh Show" weekday mornings from 7-9A (CT). The full show airs from 6-10A (CT) Monday-Friday on WSCR as well as on the Audacy app. CHSN will also interrupt the simulcast in the event of breaking news.

David Haugh is already a busy man as co-host of BOTH "The Big Pro Football Show" & "The Chicago Lead" every weekday in addition to his morning radio work.

I may be alone here but…
Unless you live in a fringe area where the signal is weak, I don’t see a problem using an “old fashioned” antenna.
I’ve helped several family members and friends set up antennas with good results using both indoor and outdoor antennas.
There are even devices out there that will let you stream the signal from your antenna to any tv in your home using an app.
HD homerun, Plex, Tablo are great options for this and even give you DVR capabilities.
The best part is, being able to get rid of or trim your expensive tv package that you only have so you can watch regional sports.

You are alone here.

99% of people can't chew gum and walk at once. Majority of people born after 1995 have no idea what AM radio is and what an "old fashioned" antenna is. It is called streaming and for the old people in their life (very common term) they use TV's and cable or satellite, the old peoples technology.

From a ham radio aspect, people no longer experiment, they want plug and play. No longer innovators and testers, now appliance users. Majority young hams (minimal numbers at that) play digital mode and never talk. The same applies here. People commonly say, why should I use a radio when I have a cell phone? It is a failed statement, but it is the majority consensus.

Just stating the fact! I have an OTA antenna set up for those times when cable/sat/IP goes down or the worst case scenario. It just does not happen with the masses anymore. Instant now, no effort, give it to me, 5 seconds ago.

No one wants to take the time anymore they would rather pay for the convenience of instant gratification. But the price of instant gratification keeps going up and up.

I was watching "The House of L Podcast" on YouTube and Laurence Holmes devoted an entire pod to CHSN as well as the old fashioned antenna in which fans could watch the new channel on WJYS 62.2 & 62.3. 670 AM The SCORE's afternoon host even showed such an antenna to the YouTube camera.

I think it's as much an inconvenience as anything. Plus, I wonder if there are certain buildings where an antenna has to be installed professionally and not individually.

There are some buildings that are so dense you cant get an OTA signal. I know in the past, the gambling area at and along River Rd in Rosemont was one of them. There was a fund set up for those people at certain addresses to get free or subsidized cable due to not being able to receive the OTA signals.

Many Townhomes and Many Condos and some homes have an HOA that does not allow outside antennas at all.

Besides that, if an entity does not allow an outside antenna, the interested party will have to settle for an indoor setup.

Our resident PhilJSmith knows a lot more about this than I do, so I will defer to add on more info. :-)

Most people up here in Kenosha are fans of Wisconsin teams, so it's probably not a big deal. That said there is a sizeable amount of Chicago fans in Wisconsin.

It is also not available on Spectrum, which is our cable system. It is available here on U-Verse and DirecTV. Supposedly it will be OTA in Milwaukee at one point.

WJYS never had an OTA signal in this area except during DX conditions, but with the repack DXing TV is next to impossible. Same in Lake County, IL which does have mostly Chicago Sports fans.

WJYS used must carry to get coverage in that area because the TV signal was also non existent in Lake County. No idea how it is now. We're talking portable analog TVs the last time I tried watching OTA TV in Lake County

That's what I was wondering in regards to antennas in certain buildings. It's simply not possible in certain areas.

It's only a small sample size, but I'm one of the lucky ones that has CHSN in the same channel location as the former NBC Sports Chicago at DIRECTV 665 as well as on WJYS 62.2 & 62.3 digitally. It sounds much better on satellite than over the air.

Hoa's can't prohibit you from installing an antenna.

From a licensed Ham Operator that has been involved in going against HOAs and villages/suburbs preventing antennas and external fixtures being installed outside of homes. You have more luck defeating a village than you do an HOA, that can and will vote you out of your domicile.

The article said:

The rule does not apply for a few areas like common areas that are owned by a landlord, a community association, or jointly by condominium or cooperative owners where the antenna user does not have an exclusive use area. Such common areas may include the roof or exterior wall of a multiple dwelling unit. Therefore, restrictions on antennas installed in or on such common areas are enforceable.

You have a freestanding home with an HOA, you can almost certainly install an antenna on your domicile, unless it is an eyesore or they prohibit certain types of antennas (possible that an OTA antenna might be banned while a SAT dish is not). Ultimately it is YOUR area so you have more freedom. If you have a joining townhome, condo or other "shared" structure, goodnight, goodbye, farewell, not happening. I have a client that is in a suburban townhome. Wanted DISH. HOA = NOPE. I devised a way to cement the Sat pole in a bucket, aimed it to the sky out of his garage. Marked the ground. Pull in and out. Done. HOA fined him for several things. Including setting a prohibited antenna. Defacing property (the ground markings using permanent marker), eyesore, etc. He got a lawyer and won, as it was not permanently mounted on the building itself.

Finally the FCC is toothless. Short of some HAM and pirate busts, if you are not messing with cell companies (aka money and profit) they will not advocate or support you.

This is EXACTLY what I did decades ago! I was living in an apartment complex who would not allow me to mount my DirecTV dish on my balcony or the side of the building's roof. I lived on the top floor.

A quick trip to Home Depot and two hours later, I'm watching satellite TV. I fine-tuned it, and I had it lined up, so the signal rarely went out. It was directly pointed to where it should be. I loved it!

Years later when I moved, I simply took the entire "package" and discarded it in the dumpster.

Way back in the day, an apartment complex would make a deal with a small cable-TV company. Usually something you never heard of. The channel selection was dreadful. The "hot" channels like sports, entertainment and even news; they only offered CNN, it really ticked me off! I had friends who lived down the street in homes and they had better cable and satellite TV.

My home has Comcast and although I love it, it's still way too expensive.

A Friday news dump? Probably. Although Xfinity & CHSN remain at an impasse, the new Bulls, Blackhawks & White Sox TV outlet has signed a multi-year deal with Fubo TV.

It means that Bulls' fans will be able to watch tonight's game in Milwaukee on CHSN via Fubo. As for Predators/Blackhawks, it's an ESPN+ exclusive on this night. It won't air on CHSN due to the NHL's U.S. contract with the "Worldwide Leader".
