Interesting Los Angeles Report on Legendary KLOS-FM 95.5

This report illustrates how the industry is a shell of its former self.

Los Angeles has a legendary rock station with KLOS-FM 95.5. They fired their two afternoon hosts in what appears to be a cost-cutting move. Kevin & Sluggo were the hosts.

KLOS-FM is owned by Meruelo Media Group who is looking to sell that station.

As for the pay? $70,000 to $90,000 per year. This is the base pay. It doesn't include endorsements and anything else which could add to that figure.

This is 2024 and Los Angeles is the second highest market in the U.S.

Who exactly to they expect to work for that kind of money? Someone out of college with little experience? Maybe it costs too much to syndicate a successful afternoon show from another market.

Would this happen in Chicago?

The pay is a little more than what Alpha media pays here but you also have to double up as PD, MD, Sales, Washroom attendant..... OK I am being sarcastic, but, you do have multiple duties at those stations for that company. It is common.

Corporate mentality? Don't like it? There are others unemployed looking to eat or AI will replace you.

Meruelo is a wreck. They have tanked KPWR in LA too. Not sure what they were thinking when they bought from Emmis.

I don't know if a Chicago radio station would pay what seems like a bargain basement salary to spin Classic Rock songs in the 3rd largest media market in the country.

I get the sense that KLOS-FM in Los Angeles is preparing for a sale of its radio station as well as other stations that Meruelo Media Group currently owns in that market.

Even though KLOS has quite the history as a rock station out there, I can't imagine ANY disc jockey would want to spin records for radio's equivalent of minimum wage.

Read my post ⬆️. How much do you think those that work FT or PT VT into several markets make?

Some of the larger companies (Meruelo is not one of them) will tie in bonuses to doing other duties or hitting certain demos on the ratings.

The only perk to make additional bonus money, doing club events for CHR type stations, personal appearances for businesses. But even those are starting to dry up.

Radio is not what it used to be. Just wait until AI starts running the show.

I'm definitely aware about AI. Not everyone is thrilled about that taking over radio like everything else.

When I made my comment, I had a tough time figuring out who would want to work at a radio station like KLOS-FM in Los Angeles for a salary that I think is small under that kind of ownership group compared to other high profile jocks under different ownership elsewhere.
