WKQX Completes Its Return To Q101 Identity

At its station anniversary concert this evening, Cumulus Media Alternative 101.1 WKQX Chicago made its return to its heritage “Q101” identity.

Timed to the rebirth of the “Q” brand on then 87.7 WKQX-LP in May 2012, the station was holding its “Ahoy” concert with Weezer where the announcement was made around 8:00 this evening. https://radioinsight.com/headlines/223740/q101-branding-to-return-to-wkqx-chicago/

From the chatter I read on the 101 WKQX Facebook channel, a lot of people had been calling WKQX “Q101” already. Nevertheless the announcement seemed to get some decent cheers and applause at the concert.

It does. Now they can market their heritage. There is a strong emotional connection to a certain generation of people. The calls they were taking last week from listeners were incredible. They can now tap into that with promotions, listeners and for that matter advertisers.

I myself was taken back to when I was a teenager. When I was 14, 15 or so and again in my early 20s I listened to them all the time when I was 14 and 15.

Jeremy 100% of people I know call it Q101 and have called it Q101 since they returned to the format. While I do not know 100% of the market listeners, most people still call it Q101.

Ultimately, it really doesn't matter. If it raises their ratings, awesome.

The naming lease that WTW (Willis Towers Watson) purchased for the tower ends in March 2025. With AON acquiring WTW in 2021, the “Willis” name will have negative value for AON if the WTW division is reorg’d under the AON name. If AON kills the lease, they won’t need two namesake buildings in Chicago, and from what I understand, the existing AON building is better-suited as their corporate center. Blackstone will most likely be offering up the naming lease for 233 S. Wacker in the near future.

875 North Michigan Avenue

Radio troll Mancow Muller used to boast that his morning show was broadcast from an antenna “at the top of the 'cock." No longer: The owners of the building formerly known as the John Hancock Center removed all references to the original name last year.

The John Hancock Insurance Company completed the tower in 1969, but today, it no longer has offices in the building. The owners are still looking to sell the naming rights.

And what will happen when they do? Easy — everybody’s going to keep calling it the Hancock, anyway.

I think we're all creatures of habit and thus, have a comfort zone. Both Willis Tower and 875 N. Michigan Ave have been known as Sears Tower and John Hancock Tower for so long, it's simply something we don't think too much about.

I would compare it to renaming a bridge. How many would call that bridge by its current name? I don't think too many people would.
