I have noticed WDRV-FM/The Drive is rocking a little harder. I believe WCHI-FM 95.5 is a factor.
As been stated many times, certain formats simply won't last in Chicago. And I agree, personality is mandatory.
I would expect a music station to be playing just that at the top of every hour. The exception might be a newscast during morning drive, however, I don't think too many FM music stations even have a news department these days.
WKQX/Q101 can be referred to anything you like...101.1, Q101, WKQX, etc. Bottom line, it's the music. Listeners demand good music along with knowledgeable djs. My 2 cents? Get the music right and then, fill in the air talent, promotions, etc. I don't see anyone jumping to punch up Q101 because of their branding. It's the music. Take WXRT-FM. "Chicago's Finest Rock." That slogan has been around for decades. Due to unwanted tinkering, someone decided "Chicago's Home For Music Lovers" would be a fine substitute. Wrong!! The original liner fits that station best, but, hey, they still have a core listener base with or without that tagline. I'm a huge fan of WXRT, but, the fact they are owned by Audacy has actually hurt them.
If billing continues to hold up and I have no inside knowledge, I think their future is fairly secure. Again, my 2 cents and WYTZZ95FM and Jeremy, I welcome robust and civilized debate.
Q101 seems to be stuck between two stations and it's been that way for a long time. Unless they do frequent specialty shows such as playing their entire on-air library or the history of alternative rock, things of that sort, I don't see much change.
A question for the board. In your opinion, who is the radio operator with the most struggling stations and this includes billing as well? Would it be Cumulus or possibly Audacy? I tend to believe iHeartMedia has a strong stable of stations.
Thank you. Excellent thread.
