WLS-FM compared to WCBS-FM is different. WCBS actually has jocks that you can relate back to the past in the market. Scott Shannon, Race Taylor, Broadway Bill Lee, Joe Causi, Dave Stewart. These are 80s/90s LEGENDS that defined the time period and the market itself.
Compared:
WLS-FM is an 80s rock based classic hits playing 70s cuts too. They are WDRV- Lite. Think I am kidding. Go look at their playlist from today. The 6AM hour had 0 black or rhythmic artists. Same for 7AM except at 7:59AM Michael Jackson's Don't Stop Til You Get Enough crept in. 2 hours? Did the selector make a mistake and allow the 1 rhythmic song/artist slip in???? What a JOKE. Considering Chicago's diverse pop, rock and rhythmic/dance history in the 80s and 90s. (WLS, WYTZ, Q101, B96 Pop and Dance, WBMX Urban Dance, WGCI, WLUP, WWBZ, WRCX) Find your own path WLS-FM instead of wanting to be like WDRV which consistently kicks your ass in the ratings. You have Erin (sorry Erin, you are awesome, but you don't belong on this station). Tim Virgin (he is awesome too) associated with 90s Alternative. Dave Fogel, 90s Lilith identified even if he had 80s jock exposure other markets. Brilliant! Let's bring via voice track a New York legend most Chicago people have no idea who he is, Kidd Kelly. He admits he is not local on air, but he's happy to be in Chicago. 🤦♂️
Cumulus is on the cheap like everyone else. Slamming commercials into the Top hour. Lackluster production. They will never pump money into this to make it sound good, in turn allowing the better listeners to go elsewhere and consume other programming. Here is the formula for Terrestrial radio: WHAT MATTERS IS IN BETWEEN THE SONGS, even if you have commercials. These jocks while nice people, do not belong on there, as they are not providing the "in between songs". Someone will say the jocks do not matter they are solid and do good on there. No, this is a Classic Hits format, throwing the listener back into time, when people can listen to commercial free music from their past with no jocks on their phone, YouTube, flash drive, Spotify etc. Non current music is hot, WLS-FM is ratings rich by default. WCBS has literally no one directly competing with them as it will be an uphill battle to duplicate it and be profitable.
Jeremy I agree with you most of the time. But Me-Tv has problems of its own not being able to be received on all radios especially in car. It does share some audience with WLS-FM but not that much. Looking at the last 10 songs played, there are 0, none from the 80s. The late 80s Rick Astley song is an anomaly as they will be smart to start moving forward in time. Lets be honest. What listeners are MeTv-FM receiving with no jocks and just random music? Older demo 54+ and non salable demos that do not know how to use/do not have/can't afford alternative technologies and in turn deal with commercials. Regardless, it still does not dismiss the poor effort Cumulus is putting forward.
Go listen to some air checks of B96, WLS-FM, Z95 and even Q101 in the 70s and 80s, even the 90s from Chicago. That was talent that made the music and the station stand out. This is why people still know Eddie & Jobo, Johnny B, McFly, Gary Spears. Still discuss stations like WLUP, Energy, 80s Channel, the old WBMX-FM. Care to venture which current on air jocks and radio stations will be discussed 30 years from now? If terrestrial radio has not buried itself into the ground by that time.
