They said the what GM recommended fixing a chevette brake pedal with manual brakes that just appeared to not bleed correctly is to hit the firewall back with a rubber hammer. They said they called GM's helpline back in the late 70's and have fixed brake issues like this on at least 3 dozen chevettes and was a known problem/fix till they stopped making them.
They said the power brake models didnt have the issue but the manual brakes people would jam the pedal so hard it actually bowed the firewall out and caused the brake rod to not be long enough and cause all sorts of issues.
Any truth to this? I have no reason to doubt this as the guy that has worked there since 1973 and has done several himself... he thought GM was pullin his leg when they told him that but he said it worked. He had been messing with a chevette for days trying to get a high firm pedal and couldnt find a dang thing wrong with it till he did what GM said and walla - instant perfect pedal he said.
I told them I guess I know where to take my car with wonky brakes and Ive replaced everything multiple times over. I may try it. He said it doesnt need to move much and use a rubber hammer and just smack it right on the sides and bottom of the master cyl on the firewall and it will magically fix itself.
