I responded with the following which brought a reply from the original poster, and a further response from myself.
Steven Benjamin
Actually he did endorse weapons ownership...the sword Peter slew off the Roman Centurions ear with...he didn't have to go get it...he had it on his person...other disciples had weapons too and were known for carrying them.
At the Last Supper, Christ commended the disciples if they had money to go out and buy a sword, and if they had no money, to sell their garmet and use the money to buy a sword. And two of the disciples were already armed and revealed they had swords on their persons already.
Luke 22:36
34 And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.
35 And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.
36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.
37 For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.
38 And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.
WILLIAM WROTE:
that's nice and all, but did Jesus himself own/carry a sword? It doesn't say he wouldn't condone others to own a weapon, it just says that he wouldn't.
STEVEN BENJAMIN:
You are correct about the assertion of the illustration above. But based on the assertions of Scripture, I still have to disagree with the illustration above on the notion that CHRIST WOULD NOT OWN WEAPONS
IT all depends on whether or not you believe the Bible is truly the word of God or not. As we are treating this like "JESUS" is Real here, and basing thing on his life as recorded in the Bible...then a pretext for presuming scripture is the penned word of God by servants inspired by the same. THIS BEING THE CASE...there is then room to discuss the PERSON OF JESUS...as if he is "STILL ALIVE"...a conscious entity and Sentient being who while not seen here on earth in a while, is alive and well in the universe.
NOW these two pretexts about the person of Christ, and whether or not he would own a weapon or not...brings us to a matter of prophecy, and at least two MESSIANIC PROPHECIES (Prophecies of Messiah), show Christ in the possession of, and owning weapons.
King James Version: Psalms Chapter 45
1 My heart is inditing a good matter: I speak of the things which I have made touching the king: my tongue is the pen of a ready writer.
2 Thou art fairer than the children of men: grace is poured into thy lips: therefore God hath blessed thee for ever.
3 Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O most mighty, with thy glory and thy majesty.
4 And in thy majesty ride prosperously because of truth and meekness and righteousness; and thy right hand shall teach thee terrible things.
5 Thine arrows are sharp in the heart of the king's enemies; whereby the people fall under thee.
6 Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre.
7 Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
Some would argue here, that this is speaking of GOD (the Father) and not Christ. In Vs 3, we see a reference to one called "O Most Mighty" and noted to be of royal line possessing both "GLORY" and "MAJESTY." This person in vs 3, OWNS A SWORD!
In vs for we see of this person who previously shown in vs 3 also shown to be referred to as royalty, and with a title of "O MOST MIGHTY" owns ARROWS, and the means to put them into the heart of the Kings enemies.
In most mainstream evangelic prophetic interpretations of the 4 horsemen, a rider on horse whom is labeled in modern commentary to be the anti-christ arrives with a bow, but that rider, is not this rider. THAT RIDER arrives with a BOW, but has no ARROWS.
THIS RIDER in Psalm 45, is shown to have ARROWS, and the means to shoot them.
In vs 6, we see this owner of weapons, of arrows, and a sword, is then referred to as having a throne that lasts for ever and ever, and is referred to by the titled "GOD"
BUT READ vs 7 carefully, the one being spoken to in vs 1 thru 6 is addressed as "GOD"... and then it is noted this person has a GOD OF THEIR OWN and this "GOD" is ANOINTED by "HIS GOD" with the oil of gladness and in a portion of measure above his fellows.
This is a messianic prophecy of one who's kingdom is referred to as an everlasting Kingdom, a Kingdom that lasts FOR EVER AND EVER. And this person is seen to own a SWORD.
We only see so clearly this illustration of the passing of an ETERNAL KINGDOM to a "CHRIST" so clearly in two other passages of scripture, the book of Daniel and the book of The Revelation.
In Daniel 7...
We see one "LIKE THE SON OF MAN". Note in Genesis we see a prophecy that the SEED OF THE WOMAN, will bruise the head of the seed of the serpent. And note that Christ Yeheshua was born of a virgin, hence he was NOT THE SON OF A MAN...but rather "LIKE" The son of a man.
Daniel 7
9 I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire.
10 A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.
11 I beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake: I beheld even till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the burning flame.
12 As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and time.
13 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.
14 And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.
