There are those who lived with him and have a different experience and even amongst themselves take very contrasting positions. We must lend ear to their reports, but for those of us, not there in the timeframe, we must take seriously the truth left on Record, there is a reason The LORD moved David as he did to make those archives.
There is a historical Process to TRUTH being presented into this world, You should listen on the timeline here below from approx 28:30 to 29:30 on the timeline.

And consider STRIFE AMONGST THE APOSTLES…was noted in the New testament to occur after Christ Ascension. Not immediately, but it came. We have seen the same in recent years with regards to the divisions in doctrine and viewpoints amongst varied leading personalities of survivings students of David Koresh. WHY? The answer is in the sermon above
”What Keeps Zion Strong? WHAT HAS ALWAYS KEPT GOD’s PEOPLE IN UNITY AND STRONG? The Spirit of Prophecy. Without a living prophet The Church has NEVER Been a UNIT! In ANY TRUE Reform of the Word of God there is a LIVING Prophet Directing that Truth!”
”WITHOUT A LIVING PROPHET…THE CHURCH HAS NEVER MOVED FORWARD IN TRUTH!”
SO, IF David Koresh was in fact Prophesying truthfully, of the Seal of the 144,000,
And was teaching “Present Truth”, then that truth built upon former truths to reach that timeframe, and thus for those 144,000, “NO” would be the answer to your question. They will have “SOME” grasp of Brother Houteff and Brother Roden messages between 1923 to 1978, but only enough to see that the “PRESENT TRUTH” of “THE SABBATH SEAL” harmonizes to the former truths, the present message harmonizes to the former. But they will not have an in-depth understanding of those messages beyond that. But must they possess An understanding of Every Message leading up to David Koresh, if his teachings are correct, and I believe they are, and as I understand the Bible with regards to Ecclesiastes chapter 12, the answer is “NO” to do not need all that book Knowledge, what they need, what we need, is “LIVING WATERS.”
The Messenger giving that message, the “ANGEL OF REVELATION 18:1,2” may well indeed have a greater understanding as he is to likewise be “Representative of the Living Wave Sheaf.” And the Angel of Revelation 18:1,2 along with “Another Voice From Heaven” seen in Revelation 18:4, prophesy the past into perspective not only for the inhabitants of the earth, but for the inhabitants of Heaven likewise. So in this regard, a grasp of the former messages is present enough to Heaven’s Witness as well to recognize the Truth of that Messenger which gives Heaven instruction as well as those on the earth.
In that regard the answer to your question, at least as far as any new messenger is concerned, is “YES” that messenger will need to understand the former truths, but that understanding comes not book knowledge, not by years of having their name on any particular church roster, nor by any affliation to personalities living or passed away, that Knowledge for that Messenger comes every bit as much as it has for every person who has ever accepted “THE PRESENT TRUTH” of their respective eras, it comes by “LIVING WATERS”, it comes by THE VERY LIVING TESTIMONY, THE LIVING SPIRIT OF PROPHECY!”
Angela, your question was actually:
Does this apply to messages given by God through others in the past as well? That is, does one need to start by having an understanding of Scripture, of Ellen White's teachings, of Ben Roden's teachings, etc.?
And the answer to your question is, “NO." While these are important, what is most important is that you have a heart that is receptive to the truth, a heart that holds TRUTH in esteem above all else. In such, a heart given to seek confirmation of truth and enlightenment not to the approval of mankind, but to the approval of God, and in such, seeks that truth from HIS SPIRIT! A heart that thirsts for, and can only be quenched by “LIVING WATERS”.
Thank you for reading Angela, I Know I could have offered such answer in a single short post, and while I considered the sake of others in giving reply, I prayerfully considered yours as well. I hope you found the time spent in reading this reply, as I did in writing it, to be a worthwhile endeavor.
For reading here, as well as my posts formerly on “The Mt. Carmel Discussion Board”, thank you for your consideration. I pray that Jah’ Blesses you for such.
