That "specialist" has a funny way of thinking, since Three Mile Island was a flip of the coin. The reactor was shut down, but like most reactors needed continuous cooling even after that. Not getting it, the core started to melt. Half of it did melt, but containment building held. Even with control rods inserted, without cooling meltdown will occur. Then its a question of containment being sufficient to avert disaster. Now this old reactor in Japan: has no containment building, instead has a containment vessel. It was last month just given a ten year extension on its useful life of 40 years. Its reactor vessel is already at twice its maximum design pressure and temperatures are still rising.
