One cool piece of trivia: I believe the original Wii's part number is RVL-001. I probably read on Wikipedia how that comes from the codename Project Revolution. I haven't checked the part numbers for their other systems, but I'd kinda doubt that GameCube's part number was similar to "Project Dolphin." No offense, but what was the revolution with Nintendo Wii? I know the motion controls were pretty much mandatory, but has gaming changed because of them?
Well, two weird things happened (at least from my point of view) with the Wii. Once I turned on the power strip, the LED light was blinking red (not just solid red like the standby mode on Wii U. I think it turned solid red at some other point. When I first saw the GUI, the colors were also pale and distorted, like one of the primaries was missing. I use Monster's brand of component cable with three wires for the video signal. Somehow, that corrected itself within a minute or two. I think I entered a system menu and then went back to the fully colored interface.
Today, I had a few goals. I wanted to look at the internal memory and the save files. Then, I wanted to check the online store. The internal memory kind of discouraged me. I remember reading about how game publishers could decide whether you're allowed to make a copy of your save file. Ideally, if I was going to transfer some game saves over to my Wii U, I'd want to pick and choose. Since Nintendo won't let me do that, I was trying to outsmart them and move things like "Mario Kart Wii" somewhere else, so that they wouldn't get transferred to a Wii U system where I can't use a GameCube controller (unless the USB adapter works in Wii mode). Well, for the "Mario Kart Wii" save file, I didn't see any option besides delete. Why would I want to get rid of all that progress? I know that I've unlocked every character, and probably close to every vehicle. It still shows my online statistics (I doubt you can play online anymore). Those are interesting for historical reference.
It's kind of a similar situation with some other games. The only game where I might want to start a new save file could be "Super Mario Gravity (Galaxy)," since I doubt I'm even 10 hours into the story, and I forget what happens at the start of the game.
In other words, all of that data has to stay stuck on the Wii because of my OCD controller choices?
I think your Miis are another data category that move from Wii to the Wii U. In my Mii channel, I just have one of myself, and I like my updated Mii on the Wii U better.
I went to the Wii Shop and confirmed that I only have 400 Wii points left in my account (the deadline for adding more was in March). Do you know what seems insane? I doubt there are any games in the entire Virtual Console or the Wiiware section that you can buy for 400 points!! Basically, that money goes to waste? i had that happen with a gasoline gift card once. The first transaction left 25 cents in the change column and the attendant didn't want to give me an amount ending in $0.25 on the next visit.
As long as it was powered up, I wanted to try and play some "Super Mario Kart." It feels "sacrilegious" to say that game hasn't aged too well. I mean, it's still fun, but the tracks pretty much follow a square or a circular path. I tried Luigi, who I think is a "balanced" character. His handling wasn't too difficult (probably too sensitive). Then I used heavyweight DK, Jr (I think it's Junior in this game). Once you get more than 10 coins, you're so much faster than everyone else on the track (at least in 50cc mode). His handling was only a challenge in the ghost-themed course. I don't think the CPUs ever collect the visible coins or even the item boxes (which are just 2D and painted on the ground). You can collect 30 or more coins in many of the courses with only a little extra effort and not veering too far off your racing lines.
In terms of the emulation, I was wondering what scaler settings they used. The Super Nintendo was designed for 4:3 TV sets. My picture looked like they expanded it enough to almost fill a 16:9 width at the expense of trimming part of the top and bottom areas. The picture looked a little too wide, although I couldn't imagine it being slimmed down. I guess that's kind of saying that I might prefer the Wii U emulation a little better? I haven't played this particular game on Wii U (or bought it yet), but Mario looked the right size in "Super Mario Bros."
I wasn't sure about some of the other graphical quirks. When the characters would lean to the side and change their sprite, the animation looked a little fuzzy instead of sharp and smooth. On a tube TV, you'd probably be used to a fuzzy image.
The music was still high quality and the AI feels like a "Mario Kart" game. You can be having a perfect run, and the computer catches up within one or two mistakes. If I was lapping part of the field, they were lapping those drivers, too. Come to think of it, how would the slowest karts (50cc) be lapping anyone? Are the courses just that short?
The other VC game I have on the Wii should be "Sonic the Hedgehog 3." Why didn't I start with the first one? I don't think I've ever cleared the first zone in this game (a water level where you keep needing air bubbles). I doubt Sega offered their games on the Wii U, so I suppose that one is trapped on my Wii as well. I know there's a Sega Ages collection releasing soon, and one company makes cheapo clone consoles with dozens of the Genesis games installed.
Speaking of Virtual Console in general, did you read how it's NOT coming to Switch in the same format as the Wii (U) generation? I either do or don't understand that. Companies just act like they want to dictate which hardware you can use to play their old games. Now, if they could lock it behind a premium online subscription and have the classic games work like Netflix or a time trial, even better? That doesn't sound very customer-centric, though. To be honest, I haven't tried to figure out exactly how it works yet. They just made it sound like you're not buying a license to one specific game to grant unlimited access as long as you play it on the same hardware as the online store where you bought the license.
All I can figure is that, for people who want to preserve these games, or play them on the older consoles, it's going to come down to whether you can buy the limited edition hardware clones close to when they release and then back up your ROM file from the cartridge to an SD card?!!
I'm not sure if that's all that was on my mind. I have too many games to finish on the Wii! Some of them are even remakes from the GameCube era.
