Let's talk local elections.

Is anyone taking this Colton Winegarten trans "woman" seriously as a candidate for mayor? I mean I've heard some interesting nonsense coming from her camp.

I don't think she can get more votes than Mr. Bailey and the Cohen guy four years ago, but I guess she could slip in the back door. Or at least her husband can. LOL

She could have moved anywhere but chose Granite City, so right there you have to wonder what the hell was she thinking.

I wouldn't vote for her because she is trans and I wouldn't vote against her because she is trans. If her politics are far left, that's a No for me whether she is a he a she a heshe a shehe, or identifies as a cat.

Damn, Tim Walz really really really wants to be a U.S. Senator pretty badly.

Soccer, I don’t think he’ll be taken seriously. Maybe there are enough young liberals in town that will cast him a vote but not enough to beat Parkinson.

The other woman has lost at least three elections so I’m not sure why she’s wasting her money. It’s pretty obvious she’s not electable.

Are there any other candidates? I thought the chunky little guy that ran the cinema was running. That may have been more of a challenge.

I mean when it comes for mayor, it may be good if someone could just wear some professional clothing, tuck in their shirt, wear a decent pair of shoes when honoring veterans.

As for their personal life of their biology.....it is secondary to "What are they going to do for Granite City, IL?"

If that's still the best man for the job, then so be it. It's somewhat a secondary concern, but I don't believe those choices represent Granite City well.

I'd probably like to also see the city hire someone for mayor outside the network of civil servant jobs, namely police/fire.

Who was the last mayor not to flash a badge or hold a hose before being elected Mayor?

Again, that's not the only consideration, but someone well versed in economic development, or maybe some other credentials may give the highest office in Graniteland a different approach.

Granite City's mayor is not on my ballot...but I'll happily take the conversation out of Washington with you.

And if they are a mayor -- Tuck your damn shirt in at the very least. Sheesh!

LOL, it’s too late now but back in the 70’s when we were thriving we should have gone to a city manager form of government. That person would run the daily operation like a business and we could still have an elected figurehead mayor who could cut ribbons..

As for the last non cop or fireman, I guess that would be Von Dee Cruz in the late 80’s.

Excellent name, and I was little back then. When the adults were talking, I didn't know the difference between Ghan-DEE or Von DEE..

I remember he wore a suit and appeared at a school assembly. I can only really judge the ones who came after him.

My impression is that Von DEE is probably the last of the old guard. Meaning, the machine was running well....the mill was running well.. and though development wasn't stellar, Granite City still had the 36,800 on its sign.

I view Selph and Hagnauer favorably.

Parkinson, I see him as a people person....door's open kind of guy. I have only observed his reign from a distance. PEople I know seem to like him.
I probably would too.

But please tuck your shirt in.

I agree on the City manager. Throw in the large salary to a City manager.......and the Mayor can be the dean of the city council...so to speak. I'm not informed on the model...but I guess it contrasts with the 'strong mayor' model.

Jim Jordan never wears a coat in Congress but he's a tough legislator. I wish we had someone like him instead of Durbin.

Can't argue that but Von Dee was a figure head. The power that ran the area was Nellie Hagnauer, the last strong leader we had at the city and county level.

My wife read me more of this "woman's" comments today from one of the facebook pages.

What a joke. I'm not sure if "she" or her "husband" are the one running for mayor. It seems he answers for her quite a bit. Must have picked that up from Joe and Jill.

I'm not sure what this Colton person is trying to prove. I know she lives the alternative lifestyle. She obviously has issues as must her "husband". I think she's trying to promote being trans more than being a mayor. Their choice, their money to waste.

The sad thing is, "she" will get a hundred or so votes from people that support her "lifestyle" and from people who hate Parkinson for an old traffic ticket or possibly even from some who consider it no big deal to feed the joke.

I don't know if this "woman" follows this site. I'm sure she has people trolling it, but I would say to her, "you have as much chance of being mayor as a snowman does on Mars". Your husband may swallow what you're saying but common sense, trust the science residents just consider you a freak.

I don't mind freaks being freaks, it is every other day and every other month being designated as trans this or trans that that is offensive. Or if a player doesn't want to wear a trans pride jersey on pre-game warmups on trans pride week he needs to be canceled and taught a lesson. That very thing happened to a Philadelphia Flyers player a couple of seasons ago, and because of the abuse he took, his jersey sales skyrocketed. It backfired bigly.

The you will accept this or else approach just didn't work out and a whole lot of that was just amplified in the recent election.

No one is forcing you to date a trans person, invite them to your home, buy a product they may endorse, vote for them etc. Not sure what trans activity you are seeing everyday or every other day, but no one is forcing you to acknowledge it or celebrate it. Blame Hallmark if you're tired of everything under the sun requiring recognition Mind your own business.

If you disagree with how a hockey player etc is being asked to do or not do something, take it up with management.

Maybe you should organize and promote a "closed-minded, judgemental, old white man day", lol----

I do think some of the woke thing is being shoved down our throats. I could really care less if this couple pretends, she's a he and he's she. What they do in their own home is their business.

When she starts lying about issues that involve the city, I think we have every right to call her out. She's running for office and that opens her up to scrutiny of me and everyone else of voting age in our city.

I don't think she has a dog's chance in hell of winning, but she should rest assured that if she lies, misleads or just says things because she's not as smart as she thinks she is, she gets called out.

Ivan Provorov's jerseys were sold out online after the media condemned him for not wearing a Pride-themed jersey in the pre-games warm-ups.

I didn't see any reason to take the pride-themed pre-game jerseys up with management, I simply bought a Provorov jersey online. They weren't forcing me to wear the damn thing, they were forcing the players. I don't even like the Flyers, but I had to have that jersey.

These groups put pressure on the various professional leagues and too often the leagues cave. This time since there was such a push back the NHL said screw it, we don't want to be in the middle of this in any way shape, or form.

I'm not thrilled about the whole thing but had the league not tried to strong-arm the players into wearing these jerseys and it had been on a volunteer basis, that would have been more acceptable. But to the activists that position is never quite good enough, their approach was you will wear it and like it. A handful of players said I don't think so and others less brave were glad about their stance even though they wore the damn thing themself. Imagine some of the players just wanting to play hockey and not shill for the trans community. What's next, will you be electing Donald Trump to be President??

Yes, an issue doesn't have to affect me personally in order for me to have some sort of interest.

I'm sure the league gets a cut of the money somehow, but the teams and the players whose jersey was sold get the brunt of the money.

What did Hagnauer and Selph do that you found favorable? I can't think of one positive thing they accomplish.

Dave, I think you have to credit each for things they did do. Remember, they were both there during hard financial times.

Hagnauer did get a cinema built. He did initiate the sale of part of the deteriorating sewer system to Il American which left a good amount of money for Parkinson to work with.
