Why has the beautiful fountain (at the intersection of Madison Avenue and Niedringhaus), that sparks memories of my childhood, with it's beautiful water and colored lights been allowed to rot and fester for how many years now?

I know the responsibility probably lies at the park district which is a separate taxing body, so maybe someone from there can answer why it's been allowed to remain in disrepair for HOW MANY YEARS NOW?

And I don't even want to hear, "the homeless will tear it up","thugs will destroy it"..if that's the case put a camera there and run off anyone that shouldn't be there after a certain time.

Look at the fountains in other cities around here, there is a gorgeous one in Belleville (that's the first one that comes to mind).

Secondly, this also falls on the park district, why have all the beautiful water features in the park been allowed to dry up and become ridiculous eye sores (though they have been completely cleaned up by a local church volunteering it's time). I want to see that dolphin spitting water into the pond, I want to see water rippling down and through that beautiful part of the garden. Again, pay for security at night (not some old fart on a golf cart) but actually someone who can call the police and run off wrong doers.

The park district has plenty of money for salaries of folks who really don't do much more than tool around in a side by side during their shift, trim some of that fat and get our parks up to snuff, return it to its former glory. And let the police take care of those who try to do it harm.

And how about some pretty flowers around that gazebo on Madison Avenue? That is under the care of the park district as well, even though volunteers painted it themselves year before last because the park district just couldn't take care of that either.

Does anyone else see a pattern here?

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Last I heard the fountain was so old that parts were no longer available.

If you think the park staff makes a lot of money, you must be on food stamps. The park pays next to nothing for the amount of area they cover.

You mean the mechanical parts of the fountain that need to be replaced are no longer available? Pff, whatever. Then they need to refurb the system, replace the system or rip it the hell down. Which would you prefer?

They had the money to purchase a golf course, I think they could have managed to fix the damn fountain.

And as far as food stamps go, if you knew who you are actually insulting, you and I might have a good laugh over such an idiotic remark.

The park district in Granite City lost its mojo long ago. At one time it was the jewel of parks in the area. No more. It has been passed by several parks in Madison County, including Belk, Glazebrook, and Gordon Moore. The individual you are conversing with will find every excuse in the book for Granite City politicians. Always has, always will.

Oh, now I'm a person of wealth? I'm a taxpayer who watched that lazy moron Dave Williams sit there and collect his salary making NO improvement, NOR MAKING ANY EFFORT TO MERELY MAINTAIN our park district. He grew his pension and got out while the getting was good. I say good riddance to bad rubbish.

What is your opinion when you take a child to play on a sliding board at the playground and the sliding part is completely ripped apart from the ladder section? Someone managed to put tape across the top of the ladder as a barrier (probably induced quite a sweat in doing so because they are used to having their ass plastered to a side by side seat most of the time). It might still be that way as far as I know thanks to the quarantine this year that kept most of us close to home.

If you have the audacity to say that Wilson Park is in the beautiful condition that other Park Directors maintained over the years prior to Williams, you must be suffering from some type of memory affliction.

Look at the taxes people pay that live within the park district in Granite City, and look at how our once beautiful Wilson Park can't even pipe water into those existing gardens.

Like I said earlier, they bought a golf course, but they couldn't fix the fountain, can't fix the gardens and can barely manage to fill green space street islands around the park.

No matter how many markets, BBQs, music events you schedule..you will never bring new residents to invest in a town that has allowed HUD landlords, businesses with no pride and park officials who can't even paint a freaking gazebo or keep a fountain operating, to strip away the slightest bit of small town, old town charm we had left.

We want to grow as a city, we want to build the population and add new businesses? IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN UNTIL WE CLEAN THIS DEPRESSING TOWN UP. THAT'S THE TRUTH. And we have gotten here by complacency and a sense of entitlement to those doing the hiring of family and friends, decade after decade for all municipal positions. It's about generating salaries, not about making our city a desirable place to live.

And I have no intention of running for a damn thing. I'm not a former fireman, police officer, nor born on third base to parents who held important positions in this town in years past.

So then you’re just a typical GC complainer ? All complaints and no drive to help. You really believe people who are on the park board are connected? They don’t even get paid to serve. That’s a good one.

Williams brought a skateboard park, a dog park ( I could live without that), the 4th of July event, remodeled Brown Rec and I think Lincoln Place. My nephew played hockey in a fully remodeled ice rink that Williams brought in. And you’re upset over a slide?

If you’re griping about money spent in wrong places, that’s an opinion and one you should share with the park board. They decide where the money goes so that’s a legit question. Griping to eight or ten people on a gossip site goes nowhere.

Do you know what percentage of your taxes goes to parks? Might want to look it up.

You’re right about one thing. My memory is fading due to some health issues but I still know where to address my complaints.

Belk is nice. Gordon Moore has gone to hell, at least the golf course. Never heard of Glazebrook. Where is it?

Screw the GC politicians. I just don’t know why people complain on an anonymous web page instead of going to the source. And before you ask, I e mail Pritzker and Tammy Duckworth weekly about the mess they create.

One thing GC Lady is right about is that our state, federal and county leaders, most of whom are Democrats have dumped HUD housing on us and our leaders laid there and took it.

Let me tell you something, I have read this page for years. I read and kept quiet. And through those years I have watched you defend, protect, deny accountability from any official or employee of a taxing body in this town regardless of what position they held, whether elected, appointed or hired.

I have watched you threaten people, like that young man who had the nerve to speak out against the GCHS theater teacher who was recently indicted by a Grand Jury for touching male students. You threw a hissy fit, threatened that person, and then guess what? Lo and behold, he knew just exactly what he was talking about. But you were having none of it, suggesting he lawyer up and be ready to back up his mouth. Why? It isn't the first time you have unreasonably defended the school district, specifically when it comes to any sort of sexual indiscretion.

You have done it dozens of times. It makes a person think who is this guy? Why is he so unreasonably pissed off when someone takes a stab at our local government? City Hall? The School District? The Park District? We don't have to ask why, it's as clear as the nose on my face, these are your people, these are the groups you associate with.

The reason people remain anonymous when making these comments is because they aren't stupid, they know how this town works, they know that labels will be sewn on the backs of anyone (and their children and family) who is not "in the group". I'm going venture out and make a guess that you are or have been one of the people in a position to make a person's life hell (behind the scenes) if they complain too much, even when justified. I believe you have been an elected official in one capacity or another, maybe even hired by an elected official or group of people. Strange, your pat response to so many people has been "Are you going to throw your hat in the ring?" Which on it's own, will back down a sufficient amount of people who know they would have no chance of winning an election in this town. You know it, we know it.

So, whether it pisses you off or not,(and I really hope it does) I shall continue, at my own desire, to call out anyone whose salary my tax dollars pay for. I encourage others to do the same. I will remain anonymous when I do this because I WILL NOT allow myself to become the subject of ridicule and humiliation as happened during our recent mayoral election.

I think maybe at one time, and maybe even still, one word from you to your friends and acquaintances would be sufficient to claim someone is crazy, insane, trash, ill-educated, and just not the caliber required to hold office. And that shit would spread like wildfire. Since this has worked so well for you in the past, you can consider yourself successful.

One last question though. Were you born on third base? One parent or both, in a position to ensure your station in life? Not everyone is that lucky and apparently you take that as a given.

Nope. Grew up poor on the wrong side of the tracks. Worked my butt off to become someone and did it. Success isn't a bad word nor should it be assumed that all people who run for office are "on third base".

Let me correct you as well, I didn't threaten the young man who made the comments about the GCHS teacher. I told him that making an unproven accusation (which it was at that time) could result in a slander suit against him or his parents if he was a minor. In hindsight he was right so good for him.

Wrong side of what tracks? Come on now. And I'm not assuming that only people who run for office were born on third base, because that dynamic exists for many fortunate people. Born into an established family where college is not a financial burden nor negotiable and no entry level position would have to be considered. People born on third base don't have too far to run to score or to hit a home run. We all know these types of families exist in this town. I won't name the names, but they exist. And those with those names permeate every city government venue in Granite City. Yes, even the park district.

When we finally have enough of this garbage and realize there are actually good people that are not connected and who would be thrilled and proud to do a good job for the betterment of our community, we will have a better community.

And everything I griped about in my original post still stands. I want the fountain in the heart of our city to be repaired and functioning, not ignored and people pretending like it doesn't exist.

I might have voted for you in the primary, but probably not.

I still liked Biss, because I thought the first lady should be Biss's Misses....but last I heard he's up in Evanston and doing far left things for the far left voters that voted for him...even too liberal for me, if that's possible.. (and it really is)

But I did vote for a candidate, at least in the primary for someone south of I-80...and much closer to I-70.

When do you see that happening though? If what you say is true, that there is a third base, when do others step up? Did you see our last crop of mayor candidates? I mean seriously, we had one contender and two clowns.

"Wrong side of the tracks" when I was a kid was considered West Granite and Lincoln Place so yes, I was considered "wrong side" by the classier people.

And in my most rational thought process, I agree it would be nice to have the fountain at Memorial Park fixed. It would be nice to see the Dolphin spraying water again. Until we get rid of the hoodlums that tear things up, isn't that just a waste though. These punk kids tear stuff up as fast as it gets fixed. Reasonable requests will take more than words. We all have to help the police go after these kids.

The park said back in 2004 the fountain underwent a major renovation, if that’s is true why 16 years later it need a major renovation again? Did someone not do their job correctly the first time?

If indeed it can't be fixed, let's tear the fountain down and put up a memorial to police officers killed in the line of duty in Illinois.

At some point, someone thought the water-spitting dolphin was a good idea, and some of those people appear to be dug in. I think you are right in that she won't get a positive response, but that doesn't mean that she is out of line. I would not spend a lot of money on Flipper though if I didn't have to.

From what I’m told they have a plan for the memorial fountain across from the hospital, and that it will be completed by the end of the year.

Yes, I did see that word, but it was so shadowed by your THREATENING him for coming forward and discussing the issue, that it just didn't matter at that point.

When a crime has been committed by an adult, against a CHILD, there will be an "unsubstantiated" period, as with any victim/accuser going public about the offense.

Any adult that tries to intimidate and bully, especially a child into keeping their mouth shut and not allowing them to speak out about the abuse is twisted in the head! I don't care if it's speaking out in their school, or on a city message board, or on the front steps of City Hall.

What business was it of YOURS to interfere and come to the defense of the accused, when THREATENING this poster you refer to as Sonny? Then months later claim that you never threatened this guy, like everyone who reads this board has amnesia.

Once again, you just couldn't help yourself since it was school/district related, old habits die hard. "Wrong side of the tracks" my eye, "Lawyer" my eye. Who do you think you're foolin'?

Amazing, the park district is now taking bids to repair our beautiful fountain in downtown. It's unbelievable the results you can get when you throw something out there about something that has been ignored for years and years and years.

From the Park District today:

"A resolution authorizing the director of Parks and Recreation the authority to complete the bid package and publish notice to seek bids for the Memorial Park Fountain Renovation Project."

And the Brown center was remodeled a while back. I know for a week or two they were putting in new windows and I think they did the roof too.

The dog park appears to be popular and people are doing a good job picking up after their pet.
