I've been on the page, and in the beginning it was monitored fairly closely. Most posts were done by the admin with comments allowed. The closer to the election date, it appears all gloves are off. Now, it's turned into more of a page to allow people to campaign for their favorite picks and rip to pieces the others they don't care for.
You have to give credit where credit is due. In today's climate, with everyone being a backseat driver and a self proclaimed expert about how local government should be ran, the people who stick their necks out enough to step up to the plate for these positions, at least should get recognition for doing so. There are 3 people in the race for Mayor. The only qualified candidate is obviously Parkinson. The other two candidates seem to be lacking the knowledge and education a Mayor's position would require to not only run the city, but to represent it.
This is a pretty obvious fact, but that doesn't take away from their efforts and courage to step up to the plate and at least try. It speaks volumes about the personality of Parkinson to recognize this and to not lead the charge in the character assassination of these two opponents. He even could have had one removed off the ticket all together, but chose to take the higher road. Just on these facts alone, is why he will have my vote and the vote of my family as well. I think the future of Granite City will be in good hands and very qualified hands when he becomes Mayor.
As far as the overzealous Parkinson supporters on that page, they could take a lesson from the man they support, and reel it in a bit. This contest, is really no contest and these people don't have to belittle, berate and insult these two other candidates to such an extent. The fit throwing and mud-slinging started over a candidate "taping" election information to a resident's front door. By reading the hysterical complaints posted by someone named Marie C. claiming that her dog became very upset over this person walking onto her front porch to leave his election literature, it was like she called in a pack of wolves, they started circling these candidates and went in for the kill, it's just ridiculous, childish and uncalled for.
Parkinson will make a great leader for Granite City and I look forward to seeing the growth and change that he will bring after he becomes mayor.
