Sara I'm with the Metro-East Sanitary District. (MESD) The Levees that protect Madison County are in good shape overall. Millions of dollars have been spent improving their performance over the last ten years, and more improvents are under way.

Madison County Board Chairman Prenzler has taken an active role in improving the leadership in the levee districts. Today these organizations are solvent, have competent leadership, and 98% of the pumping equipment is in good shape, but much is left to do, especially in St.Clair County.

Threats today include terrorism, overtopping, saturation and earthquakes;all these scenarios go beyond the specifications of the 1940s design, a height of 52 feet. For updated river information, go to www.mesdonline.org

Trust in the process, but remember no levee is secure forever. Sign up for Madison County Code Red at www.co.madison.il.us Code Red is the only local portal for validated levee emergency notification.

The employees of the work hard at fulfilling your expectations, and are working diligently to protect this community. If you have further questions feel free to contact me at 618-452-9400.
