Yes Gary, our St. Elizabeth Hospital was like a busy bee hive, all day long, every day of the week. I gave birth to my last child there in the late 80's and the OB floor was so busy, they had to open the auxiliary nursery. Now they are hard pressed to have one single baby in the nursery.

Eventually Gateway buys from the sisters, first to go was the "in house security department". At least I think they were the first to go. When is the last time you saw ANY SECURITY at Gateway Regional? Not that there is a huge need for it any longer because all the floors are damn near empty.

I think they have a security/valet person who roams around the campus.

One reason that all the rooms are empty on all the floors is because your doctor, who is on staff at Gateway, cannot admit you there anymore, for any thing. All admitting has to come from the Emergency Room where an "Admitting Specialist" decides if you are given a bed in the hospital.

But, if you go to the Emergency Room, you aren't seen by a physician, you are no longer seen by a triage nurse who prioritizes the patients to be seen, you are seen by a Nurse Practitioner and ONLY by a NP who confers with one of these "specialists" to decide if you warrant admission. I believe the only specialist is the single ER doc who rarely moves from behind their counter.

I have defended this place up until about five years ago. It is FILTHY, it is down right CREEPY, it's like someplace stranded in time that is gasping it's last few dying breaths.

This place is the only hospital that I know of following this patient admitting model. And they are committing suicide because of it.

Far be it from our mayor or city council to ask Gateway what their long term plans are for the hospital, the second largest employer in our community, the hospital this city has depended on for decades and decades, Gateway is soon to be a ghost town.

I miss the nuns, THEY knew how to run a hospital. The last time a family member of mine was admitted there, we could get NO answers from anyone about what was wrong with them. A sweet Housekeeping employee heard our questions, heard us demanding answers or to be transferred. At her first opportunity she told us "Do what you need to do, get him transferred somewhere else, asap before he ends up like so many others I've seen die in here." And we did.
