Yep. I'm all for eliminating publicly funded fluff, and the fluffies.
If eliminating townships would prove to be beneficial to the taxpayers while ensuring the same or better level of services to those rural locations, then I would not only sign, but would help circulate said petition.
But, there is something to be said for the checks and balances of the different political entities, though. With fewer local governing bodies it would give one well organized political group the possibility of exclusively running a very large area to their whims, with little accountability or input from other authorities on their actions.
This is already going on around here to a large extent with familiar names and same family connections permeating the leadership of every area public entity, and wanting even more. I'm sure they are all individually very fine people.
Collectively, though, it's still friends and family--and one very well organized and wealthy political group that has given us every area major position holder, possibly enabling their ensuing troubles, and working very hard to push out well meaning newcomers or critics. There is a line of succession already planned out well in advance....
Still, locally, if previous annexation fiascos were cleaned up, and there was unity and cooperation between the employees and other governmental entities, the Road Department would run more smoothly.
With more honest administration and more caring operation, the GA fund could certainly better assist those in times of need.
Our Clerk is one of the best in the state, and despite her age still has the brains, experience and connections to benefit her constituents, which has always been in her heart--and EVERYBODY here knows it.
The Assessors office would, of course, benefit from a full time Assessor. And, one less out-of-township employee would be needed. And also, really, just how many public jobs and benefits and pensions does a well-connected person deserve to get from us at one time, anyway? It's just an ugly situation, like that egotistical sign on the side of our Township Building.
