You have not offended me and thank you for sharing your experience. Actually, the manner in which you dismiss the relevance of your experience to others because of lack of proof is similar in some respects to what the apostle Peter had to say regarding something that happened to him. In II Peter 1:16-19, Peter made it plain to people that he and the other apostles were not making all this stuff up, that they were “eyewitnesses of his majesty” and he goes on to talk about the transfiguration of Christ which was a rather vivid event. But people tend to miss the point of what follows when he says, “We have also a more sure word of prophecy...” What he is, in effect, saying is, Don’t just take my word for it, there is something much more solid to base your faith upon than something that I saw and experienced. By referring to prophecy, I tend to think he was referring to fulfilled Bible prophecy. This thought corresponds to what Jesus told his disciples in John 14:29, “And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.” And this fits with what God says in Isaiah 42:8-9 “I am the Lord...Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth, I tell you of them.” It should be plain to see that this is the method God has chosen to authenticate His Word and reveal His reality to humanity. Jesus thanked the Father for hiding these things from the wise and the prudent and revealing them to babes but when, after diligent study, you begin to see the Scriptures unfold upon the pages of history, you will realize that there is something more than mere chance involved and you will have a foundation for believing that is impervious to unstudied accusations of blind faith and suggestions that the Bible is nothing more than a book of do’s and don’ts and no more authoritative than the holy books of other religions. When you have that, the hard sayings in Scripture will challenge you rather than repel you.. As an example, I once read the text of Isaiah 53 to someone who is not a Christian. He knew I was reading from the Bible but he didn’t know what part. After I finished reading it, I asked him who that sounded like. He said it sounded like Jesus Christ. And, of course, it is a reference to Him and what He accomplished. But the person I was having this conversation with was a bit dumbfounded to learn that it was written some seven hundred years before Christ walked the earth.
