    I would agree that we are tied to the mill a little too tightly. The problem is Granite City doesn't even have enough land to develop an alternate business anchor that would pay as much in taxes as the mill nor generate as much employment.

    Think about this though. Have those layoffs taken place yet? By the referendum failing the mill just saved more tax money in the tax increase than you or I will ever pay in our lives. Maybe that will help avid the layoffs. Rumor has it some construction is soon to take place on the mill property. Why would they make improvements if this was a permanent layoff?

    The point is this is so much bigger than Hagnauer or any local politician. There's not much anyone can do if they decide to shut it down.
