This is my first time posting, because this is the first time I've felt it necessary to speak up. If this Aldermanic race teaches us one thing, it should teach us all that every single vote counts.
I am a resident of ward 1 and I still CANNOT believe this outcome. If I hear one more time from anyone in this ward that they didn't bother to vote because they never dreamed that Brenda Whitaker would loose, let me warn them now, you most likely won't like my reply! If a person my age can get out to vote, people one third or half my age have no excuse not doing so.
I'm not sure which sickens me more, the people that don't bother to register to vote, or the people who are registered to vote and just don't bother to do so.
I agree with Alderdan, that just because she isn't the typical politician it may have cost her this election. But isn't that sad for all of us! We should have have been more proud that we had someone who wasn't typical.
The fact that Brenda's soon to be replacement and his sidekick had time to walk around and make empty promises should not have been the basis for this upset. When did the qualifications of the best candidate become someone who can merely walk and talk? My best candidate choice is, and always will be someone who cares about the community and does something to improve it.
The message of today is change, that's all I hear-change! Is the change of direction that is being wanted, is for us to stall where things are now or perhaps turn around completely and head backwards? Because if you have spoken with either of these guys that's exactly where we'll be going.
He hung his hat on the fact that in his opinion Brenda had been in office long enough. Well, he's right - long enough to do what was right, long enough to evoke positive change, long enough to make this resident of 63 years feel that things could be as they once were, if not better!
The plain and simple truth is, if she were living in and representing another ward they would have rallied around her. They would have recognized a leader when they saw one. Just look around and be honest, this ward is not what is once was. Thank God there are 213 of us still left in Ward 1 that could see it. I only wish there had been 218.
I also hope she realizes how much she was appreciated and how much she will be missed as our Alderman.
