My daughter and son in law are going through the exact opposite. Their new landlord took advantage or their age and inexperience and talked them into signing a lease for a year on a house he had for rent. He used the old line of "if you want it, you had better sign tonight and write me out a check because I have several families coming to look at it tomorrow".
They fell for it and believed all of his promises of repairs and updates he spoke of. (After) the check was written and the lease was signed they wanted me to come look at their new house they rented.
We went the very next day and the freshly cleaned carpets were still soaked. Soaked and stained with God knows what all. The carpets were originally off white and now are actually coffee colored with dirt and at one time they looked to have been a textured short shag and now they are slick and bald as a filthy indoor outdoor carpet, it's disgusting.
Their back yard is littered with broken old patio furniture and a pile of disassembled swing set parts piled here and there, all with promises that the yard would be cleaned up. He also forgot to remove the old washing machine that sits outside by their back door as well.
He failed to mention that the basement is full of spiders and mice and cave crickets and often gets water in it. He also left out the fact that the fridge leaks water onto the floor and the digital read out on the oven doesn't work, so baking is guess work for regulating the temp.
The bathroom toilet leaks water so bad, there is a steady drip into the basement. They called about the leak about 2 weeks ago and his response was " I know it, don't worry about it, I'm not".
This landlord lives out in Pontoon Beach some where on or around Lake drive. I keep telling my daughter that him making these repairs now 3 months into this lease, is not going to happen. Not when it was all promised to be done in the first 2 days if only they would sign the lease and give him a check. He is a dead beat SLUM LORD renting out a piece of over priced sh*t!
My daughter and her husband are paying $850.00 per month for this dump and that is about $400.00 to much....man did this guy see them coming or what. I keep telling them to hell with the lease and to just pack up and walk away from it. With this guy being the slumlord that he is, I can't see him doing anything about it if they would. Myself, if it were me in their shoes I would welcome going to court against this guy.
