Seems like a pretty stiff penalty for being a jerk. Whatever happened to "I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend, to the death, your right to say it."? Also, Opie2, excellent point - They reap the benefits of talented athletes and aren't worried about the athlete's ethnicity when they're making baskets or scoring touchdowns.
