Excellent answer, Charlie!! I had a husky, and since it usually doesn't get as cold here, their coats don't get as thick. Also, there was one year that the temp was going up and down so much (much like this year) that he was almost constantly blowing his coat and regrowing it because his poor body was confused. The sled dogs that are in Norway, northern Canada, etc that deal with those types of temperatures are acclimated for that type of weather, in addition to getting the special diet. Their coat is much thicker and they aren't as bothered by the cold. Much like taking a person from Florida and dropping them off in Alaska. Even if they have huge coats, they are going to be shivering like crazy while the people who live in Alaska are shaking their heads while they are in a light coat. Since we don't usually get this cold, the sled dogs around here will do just as poorly as the other animals in the area...they might be okay for a little bit longer than a short hair dog, but not too much longer.
