Well, route 66, we both heard that the saying refers to cannonballs stacked pyramid style on what they called a brass monkey, but I read that when it got extremely cold, the brass would contract enough that the cannonballs would fall off. You heard that the cannonballs actually froze onto the brass monkey. Flip a coin, they both make sense to me.
