My first job I was a chemical engineer. Chemical engineering has a lot of applications, so finding a job just about anywhere wouldnt be an issue. A lot of companies recruit chemical engineers. My company (Phillips 66 Wood River Refinery) recruits out of Missouri (Rolla). If he is interested in chemical then Rolla seem to be the place to go. If he wants to work specifically in petroleum the he may want to look into petroleum engineering. Nuclear engineering is one of the highest paying fields. However, there are not THAT many jobs in this area. I have a friend who is a nuclear engineer and he works on the east coast with the navy. You have to be willing to move/travel it seems with nuclear, but it does pay extremely well. Another engineering that I am planing on getting my masters degree in, is electrical engineering. I just like the aspect that electrical engineering can be applied to just about every aspect of production and manufacturing. He has a lot of options. Most schools do have mentors and would be able to sit down with him and help him make his decision. Best of luck to him. Its good to see more and more students become engineers.
