When Jefferson, and most of the founders spoke of a deity, they were generally speaking of the "God of Nature" They were attempting to speak in the most non-religious matter they knew. (the concept of evolution was not yet put forth, nor was most Science for that matter) With out paying ANY regard to ANY particular religion, they used the word GOD, to describe nature, and Natural Law. (a non-religious concept) When I was a Christian, I assumed the founding fathers were Christians. Not now, though. It seems clear to me they were simply acknowledging a deity. If they had been referring to the Christian God, I'm sure they'd have been a little more specific about that.
