"Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States;"
You cannot take one word out of a paragraph, use it's modern definition, and construe it to mean what ever you would like. "Welfare" as it exists in this country degrades the 'General welfare of the United States' (I know, it's hard for you to understand)
in a free market, free labor system - a job is arguably the ONLY way to obtain good fortune, happiness, and well-being. what if people fail to provide these needs? the government must step in or people do without.
Taxes, red tape, and government bureaucracies are whats stopping those with more, from hiring those with less. It would be one thing is we had a truly "free market" but we don't, so stop blaming the market, and demanding the government fix the problems they created. The market will correct it's self, as always, in spite of government efforts if need be.
And again, If it is the governments job to provide people with work, let them fix levies with spoons in place of shovels. Let them pack asphalt into pot holes with toothpicks. (That would be cheaper than the stimulus packages, and would have put more people to work, if putting people to work is the point)
the government, therefore, has done their job well in providing welfare to the American people
No, Most people have done well providing for there own welfare, even with the government trying to stop them. Others, have done a good job rapping our tax dollars for services our government ought not ever have toiled with.
the true culprit of our failures is the american people. not government. we do have people who abuse the system - but that does not mean the system is a failure. it is incredibly easy to survive in this country - and so some people choose to live in extreme poverty and simply survive.
Epic Fail,
The problem is not the people, the problem is the system. The people can (and will should they have too) make on there own. I don't blame someone for taking two years of unemployment, if they can live comfortably enough on it. I blame the system, for allowing someone to sit idly, collecting money for work they did not perform. In this whole economic crisis, the only time someone has ever knocked on my door, wanting to cut grass, it was a kid, wanting money to do what ever it is kids do with money these days. Not a man that wanted money to feed his kids.
i think we should make cuts...AND raise taxes. i just think we can keep the social uplift programs, ideally work on progressing them, and temporarily tax the wealthiest the most (while raising taxes for everyone) to curb the debt.
I could only agree with raising taxes If; ALL government waste was cut first, the increases in taxes was spread equally among the population, and said increase was only used to pay down debt.
(I could go for a 'the US will provide no more "welfare" for next ten years, because we need to get out of debt'- plan. )
so to put it in pure logic...
highest taxes EVER in history on the wealthiest = golden age in America with a prosperous economy.
currently, taxes nearly 1/3 of that time, yet unemployment is higher and job growth is nearly non-existent.
where is the proof that lower taxes on the rich equates to job growth? i see none. we have maintained lower taxes to cater to your arguments - i think most of america likely shares your views...at least 50%...and this nation leans to the right.
where has this gotten us?
Post hoc, every point above, post hoc ergo propter hoc.
