But the threat that it might return was still there, and could have been used in bargaining for a higher sentence Statistics aren't always reliable, but all the statistics that I have seen show that the absence of the death penalty over a decade has not contributed to an increase in crime. Matter of fact, the violent crimes associated with capital punishment have gone down. I didn't say it would increase crime, at least not in the short term, and you have cited the drop in murder in Chicago, I've told you that has more to do with their handgun ban being overturned It may not affect crime rates now, but what about 15-20 years from now, when the murderes given lowball plea bargains are out on the street?
