Test Scores: Schools in St. Louis have begun a program where there work with local universities/colleges to guarantee admission if the students participate in an afterschool tutoring program. For instance, students work with tutors from those colleges (who are getting some kind of credit or points for their service) on ACT prep, etc. Students working soley on Reading one night per week raised their ACT score on average 9 points in the semester preceding the ACT test. Factor this with the 4 different areas of the test and possibilities are endless. This is just the tip of the iceberg... Class Sizes: In the past few years Fairview Heights school district has had approx 16-20 kids in a class according to teachers in our district who went there and observed it. Basically it comes down to money and hiring of professionals. As our grades improve (with new blood, I believe they will), we receive more fed and state funding, thus being able to hire outstanding teachers. Nepotism: Solve this problem by replacing existing leadership with people who's eyes are on the ultimate prize as opposed to people who create themselves positions and positions for their friends and families. We need people at the highest level who are reliable and responsible...let's look at recent hires and fires. Names become more and more familiar and that is fine if they are good. But my experience has shown me that we hire coaches above teachers which isn't what the kids need.
