I guess those who do want to keep law and order will not be the most popular people in the school.
We have a flat town and a straightforward road system. Generations of children made it to school in 3-5 inches of school.
Most of the time it wasn't called unless there was 6+ inches of snow and sometimes even then school was in session.
Yes - other school districts were off of school.
But those districts are spread out over many miles, some people have to deal with hills and valleys and the such.
We're not Alton, we're not Richwoods. We're not any of those places.
We're about a six mile square located ironically a six mile horse ride from St. Louis. Both ends of 203 can be reached in 15 minutes depending on stop lights and the darn train.
We have a network of four lane roads that would have been the envy of other towns. Maryville and 162 form a nice V that can access any point in town within a matter of a few minutes. Each road goes north until they all cross 270 or end at 270.
Like Billy Clinton, "I feel your pain" - but this lack of a snow day may be the consequence of calling so many before.
Some have accused a certain superintendent of drinking and want to form mob action on a secretary - but none the less -- school is in session.
The School is not wrong for being in session.
There was a time when people just dealt with it. And instead of accusing school officials of being wrong, they took responsibility and got themselves in their seats.
I am glad there was school today. Snow days should be for emergency purposes. Since Granite City is flat and its roads straightforward - I dont see a reason why there wouldn't be school unless the snow pile was too high or there was a major ice event.
When I was of school age, buses were running in 6-8" of snow at times. 6-8 was about the cutoff.
North of here, 6-8 inches would still be a school day - need almost 8-10 to start calling things off, and up in Wisconsin and Minnesota - probably 2 feet - who knows.
So being the nice guy that I try to be, and sometimes fail at being, I am not attacking the posters personally - but the vitriolic language is alarming here.
