When I was working retail, my family often had the "family" Thanksgiving on a different day because their church had one that was for anyone who wanted to come, whether it was no family, no oven, or no money, etc. So, they went to that one and helped out there, and we had our own another day. So, I didn't mind at all volunteering for Thanksgiving. And by volunteering to work on a holiday, meant you usually got to choose what holidays you wanted off. I worked the later shifts, so I was usually okay for Christmas morning, and we always closed early Christmas eve, so I was okay for the rest of the family events. Which meant I got to request New Year's Eve off (which many people with families didn't mind working). It was great, usually a win win for everybody.
