That is craziness. He should be able to fly the flag to honor veterans. I don't understand how flying the flag can increase racial tensions. No one in this country owns the flag. We all own it. It stands for all points of view and for the rights of all points of view to be expressed. Good for Cody for being a classy kid and realizing that cooperation even takes courage. He wants to salute veterans, and he should have the right. Schools have become so paranoid lately, but I will be fair to them, I would not want to work in one and would not want to teach or administer. When kids are concentrated in one area, there is a mob mentality that can prevail, and sometimes symbols and colors are used But I find it a stretch that the flag should be a symbol to increase racial tensions. If someone dare thinks that the flag stands for ideals such as racism or that the flag should stand for one ideology, then kids need to be educated - not repressed. I obviously stand with Cody on this..but I'm not so quick to jump on the school. Some of the most goofy rules and rulings come from schools. But you have to realize that we don't live an an era where teachers are allowed to teach or principals are allowed to administer. We are in an area where kids are little gods put up on a pedestal, and anyhting that offends little Johnny or little Julie becomes a supreme court case. And because parents don't whoop their kids' asses anymore, yes , the difference between a finger nail clipper and a shiv is sometimes non-existent. Since kids do not learn right from wrong, since "under my roof = going to Church on Sunday" no longer exists. YES Even the American flag can be taken as an offensive symbol. It's sad that it is, but the culture has changed. It's not that we have been soft. It's not that the liberals have softened us. It is just a simple lack of discipline, a lack of respect that has caused things like this. For the flag to become a symbol that may be deemed offensive, there has to be quite the degradation of society's cultural fabric. Even if cultures change and things like that, can't it be done without personal responsibility, patriotism, and respect for one another going into the toilet? I believe there is no lack of patriotism here. It is not even about politics, and shame on people if 'flag flyers' are indicative of any one ideology. Even I believe that I am a citizen of God's creation first, before the United States of America. Yet -- I am still proud to fly our flag. I believe for our Veterans, everyone should be able to fly the flag. Or for all this drivel - for readers who like it simple ---- "When in anyone's lifetime did you ever think that you could not fly the flag of the USA in the USA?" It's really sad. It's wrong. But all that goes with it is not simple and clear cut.
