I think it was part of the course of the Mississippi River, and after the earthquake in the early 1800's, the river changed its course and this lake may have been left behind. It's just really the overall shape of the lake.

There is another Horseshoe Lake down in Alexander County, one of few places in Illinois where Cyprus trees can be found.
