I think it's fair to say a lot of narrow minded folks can't accept anyone who doesn't look like or act like themselves. Racism, homophobia, transphobia are all rooted in that self centered notion.
I do have a problem with shared locker rooms, showers etc, ya know where people get naked.
What I don't understand is the bathroom issue. There are probably women everyday who have shared a work or public bathroom with a trans man and never know it. Pretty sure they have stalls and no one walks around with the lower half of their body exposed. A trans woman is likely to be on female hormones, have breasts and looks more like a woman than some biological women. There are female to male transgender people too ya know. They would be on male hormones, likely have had their breasts removed, but still have a vagina, so basically a dude with a vagina. If they use the mens room, they are likely to use a stall, because a urinal just wouldn't work.
Here's my bottom line question... wouldn't it cause more discomfort and shock to have a female to male trans (looks like a man, has a vagina) to use the women's bathroom vs the mens and vice versa... a male to female trans walks into the men's room in a dress and boobs.
Trans people are suddenly going to disappear and they have to pee and poop like everyone else. I've noticed a lot of public places no longer have men's and women's designated restrooms, you can use either one and they have locks on the doors. Good compromise and it allows for less waiting if need be.
