The DOJ is not fighting the law, they are enforcing it. What don't you understand about there being a 90 day period before a Federal election where it is not legal to remove voters from the rolls. It's very possible this would effect people who are, in fact, citizens and they would be denied the opportunity to vote because there may not be enough time to straighten out any misunderstanding.

Purge the rolls, remove non citizens legally, not right before a Federal election.
