My Dad was in an Army Veterinary Unit that had horses and mules that helped blaze trails. They went into terrain that motorized vehicles couldn't go. He was in very inhospitable places with sickness and incredible heat. He rarely talked about his time in the Army but in the rare instances that he did, he told us about some of the horses he cared for and their names. He said they got cut off from supplies and had to kill some of the horses to eat until they were able to get supplies again. My aunts and uncles said he came back "changed". Now today, we think he had PTSD. The signs were there anxiety, nightmares every night, can't stand loud sounds, wouldn't go anywhere, etc. But they didn't really treat it back then.
