The US and Britain played a role, unfortunately, in the making of the Eastern bloc, too. The allies -- and this includes the Soviet Union -- had several meetings during the war -- one at Potsdam -- where the map of Europe was redrawn. I think Roosevelt and Churchill (and later Truman) truly believed that the Soviets would allow Romania, etc., to have free elections ... Michael of Romania saw it coming. Not long after he moved into the Allied camp, the country was "invaded" by Soviet troops. This was their plan ... and the US AND Britain allowed it to happen. I have a great admiration for Winston Churchill, but I find his statement - an Iron curtain has descended on Europe - to be rather hypocritical when one considers that he allowed it to happen in the first place. It was at Yalta, where Churchill first offered the sphere of influence -- and one country that he would not give to the Soviets was Greece --which is why a civil war was fought there, although the US provided most of the financial support (Britain could not afford it). But Britain played a major role, diplomatically, during this time despite the economic problems at home.
