One of the common problems is having people starting IVs who either do not want to use local or they are afraid of big needles. I do not know how many times I have gotten a patient with a little #20 in a small vein in the hand and I am expected to use that for induction.
Using drug therapy (lido and versed) to compensate for a crummy IV is treating the symptoms not the problem.
The burning of the propofol can be greatly reduced by injecting slow, running fluids fast and injecting into a big vein. If you have a problem, think back to the IV you had. Small? In a little vein? Next time ask for a large IV in a large vein. You will probably have less problems. And if you do this for your patients, you can skip the lidocaine. Inject slow and do not be in such a hurry to knock them out.
