Competent is not the word that needs to be used in that sentence... YOU mean not ALLOWED...Competency is a judgmental word that you cannot place every AA in......And as far as delivering an anesthetic without a MDA, you already know that they can.. so that becomes a moot point...Also one aspect out of the whole picture (example, AA's work under MDA's) hardly counts as a HUGE difference.
I think what the real concern here is that over time, I believe some CRNA's are concerned that the AA's will be more desirable to the MDA's because they have to work under them, therefore, more desire means less for the CRNA's. Sort of like what has happened to the Nurse Practitioner (NP). Physician Assistants are more desired now than NP's. PA's also make 10 to $15,000 more (especially in surgery) than NP's. I am not sure about the history of each profession's background, but I think the change in NP to PA took alot of time to change... correct me if I am wrong.
I think DD's concerns are valid, if these are his/her concerns. If I thought that I would still be working when this change would come about then, yes, I would raise hell for my profession. The problem is, we aren't the ones you should be yelping to..And putting down people that are going into the profession is a sure waste of time... Maybe it makes you feel good... I don't know. AA's aren't going anywhere. The question is what mark are you going to leave about your profession to make sure that your profession remains desired in the future?
