Dave, I agree that giving AAs a shortcut route to becoming an anesthesiologist would be a great incentive that would garner more interest in the AA profession. As you said, the possibility for advancement is very enticing (rather than just becoming an assistant and always having to work for someone else). I think a good idea would be a five-year transition program; the first year would encompass taking many of the basic medical school courses, and the last 4 years would essentially be an anesthesiology residency.
