You might want to read this article from the ASA website. It is about stepping stones from AA to MDA. It presents the idea that the first AA programs were set up for that specific purpose, to allow entry into anesthesia with the ability to step up to MDA. http://www.asahq.org/Newsletters/2003/03_03/gravenstein.html I would think that if they set up the system that an AA gets all the requirements of pre-med as part of the program structure, it would be a good stepping stone to go from AA to MD to MDA. As such, I think it would make the field of AA more attractive as you will always have the potential for much career growth and development. As the article states, the nursing approach to anesthesia is already firmly entrenched and to go from CRNA to MDA requires much back tracking and repeating of courses. As an example, I have college credits from the for my BS in anesthesia degree from a school of medicine, but they count towards NURSE anesthesia and do not apply towards any kind of pre-med or medical program. Same course but not credit. I would have to take them over again if I wanted to go into medicine.
